MENTORSHIP

The Mentorship Program, offered through the Ashtabula County Schools in cooperation with Growth Partnership For Ashtabula County, provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to explore a career or field of interest with a mentor in the private sector. It is an opportunity for a student to experience an occupation and for the mentor to share his/her enthusiasm about the profession with a young person who has the same interest. Students and mentors are asked to spend a minimum of 35 to 50 hours on the work site, and students must complete a related project.
Applicants are selected on the basis of student commitment to the project, maturity, capability, interest, teacher/staff recommendation, and grade point average.
This year over 80 students from the following high schools completed this valuable learning experience: Edgewood High School, Conneaut High School, Geneva High School, Grand Valley High School, Jefferson High School, Lakeside High School, Pymatuning Valley High School, and Saints John and Paul High School.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Growth Partnership for Ashtabula County.

In addition to co-sponsoring the Mentorship Program, Growth Partnership also funds three $500 scholarships for deserving participants.  Year after year Joe Mayernick (Executive Director) has expressed commitment to the Mentorship Program, all Ashtabula County Schools, and the fine students representing them.  Exclaims Mr. Mayernick, “we believe in the youth of Ashtabula County.  It is an honor to provide these scholarships.”

Lyondell Chemical Company-Douglas A. Towner Science Scholarships.  Since 1989, Lyondell has sponsored the Excellence in Science and Math Scholarships to local high school students.  These scholarships ensure that deserving students – future engineers, chemists and scientists – have financial support toward a college education.  In 2001, the scholarships were renamed the Douglas A. Towner Science Scholarships in honor of Doug Towner, who spent 34 years at the plant in Ashtabula.  He is an advocate for community and educational outreach activities, particularly those that encourage greater student interest in Science and Math.  This year Lyondell Chemical Company will once again provide two $1,500 scholarships.

Ashtabula Rotary Foundation.  Previously the Ashtabula Rotary provided scholarships based on mentorship experiences independently.  In 2005, the Ashtabula Rotary Foundation joined with the Ashtabula County Schools Mentorship Program to offer five scholarships.  Per Mike Bowen, Ashtabula Rotary Foundation Chairperson, “The Ashtabula Rotary Foundation is committed to the education of our youth.  We feel strongly that education is critical to the future of our community and our nation.”  Rotary is an organization committed to service above self.  The Ashtabula Chapter prides itself on community service and support of international endeavors.  Of the five Rotary Scholarships, the first is a $1,000 Ashtabula Rotary Foundation-Francis A. Herzog Memorial Mentorship Scholarship in honor of Francis Herzog who was an outstanding Ashtabula area resident and business owner, as well as a long-service Ashtabula Rotary member and contributor.  The other scholarships offered by the Ashtabula Rotary Foundation are one valued at $750 and three at $500 each.

Ashtabula Dental Associates.  Ashtabula Dental Associates has had an active presence in our county for over 60 years.  As a provider of comprehensive dental care, they have grown in size and capacity to develop a reputation envied by all and rivaled by few.  The Ashtabula Dental Associates scholarship honors Dr. James Sockman, who for 25 years was the epitome of standards set by ADA.  An excellent technician, Dr. Sockman could allay the apprehension of the most fearful patient.  His love of sport cars was only exceeded by his love of providing outstanding dental care.  A 20 year battle with multiple sclerosis led to his retirement in 1993 and subsequent death in 2005.  A $1,000.00 Dr. James Sockman Memorial Mentorship Scholarship is available to seniors mentoring in the dental or medical fields.
